As soon as I found out I was pregnant, I wanted to do a home birth. Mainly because of all the bad stories and experiences I heard about hospital and MOU births. I also believe that at a home birth, a woman has more control over the experience and she can make it as special as she needs to!

When I first contacted Crystal, it was unsuccessful, as she was fully booked for the month of June, which was my due month. I was content, but disappointed and decided to go with the MOU I was assigned to. Until about 2 weeks before my due date I took a chance and messaged Crystal to find out if she could help me…and to my surprise she was available! One of the moms who was due in June had given birth in May. At this point my partner and I were ecstatic and relieved because both him and I were not keen on the MOU.

The day I messaged her we went to go see her to discuss details. Herself and her husband Jeremy had just recently set up a consultation and birth room and we decided that I would use the birth room and that I would be the first! At this point all the fear I had about giving birth had turned into excitement. I did two antenatal visits with her and on my second visit we discovered that I was already 3cm dilated, which meant labour was close. The next morning at about 3:30am my water broke and at that point my contractions were strong enough to head to the birth room. Myself, my partner and his mom arrived there at about 4am and met with Crystal. Things were moving fast. I was in labour a total of 6 hours. I won’t lie…it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done in my life, but it was so rewarding.

Crystal was so helpful. She was my biggest support. With every contraction I searched for her hand. She supported me with such grace and calmness; just her presence calmed me down tremendously. Contractions came fast and strong and when I looked again, it was time for me to push. With the support of Crystal, my partner and his mom, my baby girl Amaani was born around 9am.

My whole experience was what I wanted it to be…intimate, safe and special. And my partner got to see the whole thing! Throughout my whole labour, not once did I feel unsafe in the care of Crystal. I had faith in her and her professionalism. She is truly a Midwife by nature. When I had my last post-natal visit with her, my partner walked pass the birth room and said “Ï will never forget this place “and I said “Me too”. Looking at that room gave me feelings I can’t explain. All I know is that they are good feelings…
